The Final Girl Support Group
reviewed by Chelsea Hofmann
The Final Girl Support Group followed Lynnette, a real-life final girl who is just trying to survive. Her life is filled with fear and paranoia, and the only thing keeping her afloat is her final girl support group. Lynnette and five other final girls have been meeting for years, trying to cope with their unique situations.
But these final girl’s stories are not done yet. One day, one of them misses a meeting, and it’s just the beginning of something bigger to come. The final girls are being hunted, and its exactly what Lynnette has trained for. She knew one day she would need to be prepared, so she sets out to try to figure out who wants them dead, and why?
The Final Girl Support Group is a powerful book about female empowerment. Final girls are their own heroes, who know sometimes no one is coming to save you, and you have to save yourself. The book explores all the ways we cope with trauma and talks about how everyone has their own story. The heroines in this book are flawed and inspiring and relatable in every way.
Once the action starts, it doesn’t let up. The reader is briskly moved through action, heartbreak, pain, sorrow, and strength. I truly felt that I was going on a journey with the characters and was completely invested in their stories. The twists just kept coming! You may think you have it all figured out, but Grady Hendrix can write a fantastic story and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Call me presumptuous, but I can see this easily being one of the best books of the year. This is a book all women can relate to, and it gives us the power to believe in ourselves. We all have the potential to be a final girl inside us, someone who will never quit or back down. I loved the storyline, the writing was fantastic, and the characters were captivating, but the real takeaway from this book was how it made me feel. Welcome to The Final Girl Support Group.
Thank you to Berkley, Grady Hendrix, and NetGalley for my ARC of this book. Opinions are my own. The Final Girl Support Group comes out on July 13, 2021
